ChatGPT Ads Launches in Japan
ChatGPT Ads Reach Japan
July 10, 2026
A few weeks ago, OpenAI announced that it had started testing ads in ChatGPT in Japan. The US pilot began in February, and now it’s Japan’s turn.

I suspect this is not a surprise to anyone. Given the money being poured into AI, advertising feels like a fairly predictable next step. The servers don’t run on enthusiasm, and there are only so many subscriptions you can sell. OpenAI’s explanation is that ads will help fund broader access to ChatGPT. Fair enough. Someone has to pay for all those questions.
Still, knowing this was coming and seeing it arrive… well, it still feels strange.
I work in digital marketing, so part of me sees another platform to understand, test and measure. As someone who also uses these tools, I’m curious about what happens when advertising enters a space that feels more like a conversation than a website.
OpenAI says ads will be clearly labeled and separated from ChatGPT’s answers, and that advertisers won’t have access to people’s conversations.
What? If you are smiling, rolling your eyes, holding your breath… It’s a good time to do so.
Also, I do wonder how that separation between a useful ad and an unwelcome interruption feels in practice. There is a thin and blurry line between these two, and even if an ad doesn’t influence an answer, people may start wondering whether it does. Once that doubt creeps in, a label may not be enough to settle it.
Being in Japan, I also wonder how it will perform in Japanese. Japanese language can be tricky not only in structure, but writing can happen in kanji, katakana, hiragana or alphabet….
I think we all knew advertising was always a plausible destination for ChatGPT and the other LLMs. Now that it’s here, I’m more interested in how it behaves than in the fact that it exists.
And, admittedly, I’m curious to see what it tries to sell me.
